USS Emory S. Land Parker VFD/Inverter Repair

USS Emory S. Land with tug boat

SS Emory S. Land (AS-39) is a United States Navy submarine tender and the lead ship of her class. She was named for Admiral Emory S. Land.

The ship provides food, electricity, water, consumables, spare parts, medical, dental, disbursing, mail, legal services, ordnance, and any parts or equipment repair that a submarine may require. To accomplish this, the ship has a physical plant similar to that of a small town, including 53 different specialized workshops.

The USS Emory S. Land shipped to AFI Systems from their current dock in the Pacific a 460V, 350HP Parker 890 Series inverter (full part number 890SD/4/0420H/B/1F/A/US) for repair, replacement of all high failure components, and load testing. The drive operated the rotation of their 30-ton crane used to resupply US Navy submarines, and had completely lost power.

AFI Systems' expert drive repair technician (a 10-year Marine Corps veteran who was “happy to help the Marines' taxi service” (in his words), was able to troubleshoot the problem down to a faulty circuit board. Then, due to unavailability of replacement boards, we further troubleshot down to the component level on that board, replaced the faulty components that were preventing the switched-mode power supply from energizing, and also replaced other high failure parts in the entire system. The drive then powered up successfully, and was given an extensive load test on our custom built dynamometer, before shipping back to the US Navy.
